ViperScore breakdown
Should you buy the Akaso Brave 8 Lite?
The Akaso Brave 8 Lite is Akaso's mid-range camera, priced at $199.99 between the sub-$100 V50X and the $300-plus DJI and GoPro models. It adds what the cheaper Akasos lack: 4K60 recording, 48 MP stills, front and rear touchscreens and bare waterproofing to 10 m. It ranks eighth among our ten action cameras and suits someone who wants a step up from entry-level without paying flagship money. The problem is that the step up is small and the price gap to a DJI is not large.
Where it earns its score
- Value is the highest factor at 82. 4K60, dual screens and bare waterproofing for under $200.
- Waterproof without a case. 10 m bare, matching the GoPro HERO13 Black, and 40 m with the case.
- Front and rear screens. Selfie framing that the V50X and EK7000 cannot do.
- 166-degree lens. A wide field of view for POV and helmet footage.
What to know first
- Quality scores 70. Image quality and stabilization trail the DJI cameras by a wide margin.
- Reliability of 77 and Satisfaction of 80. Lower than the cheaper V50X on both counts.
- Warranty is the weakest factor at 55. Standard budget-brand coverage.
- About 90 minutes per battery. Less than half the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro's runtime.
Our verdict
The Akaso Brave 8 Lite scores 75, Fair Buy, right at our buy line. Buy it if you want 4K60 and dual screens under $200. Honestly, the Akaso V50X (76, $99.99) is the better budget buy, and $120 more gets you the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro (87), which is worth the stretch.
