The verdict

Why it scored a 81

At $799.99 this nine-tool assortment covers drilling, driving, three kinds of cutting, grinding and lighting in one purchase, and the rubric rates the spread highly: features 84, reliability 91 and satisfaction 94 across 2,930 ratings, with value the laggard at 66. The caveat is the core — the DCD771 drill and DCF885 impact driver are the older brushed models, and the two 2.0Ah packs are small for a grinder and a 6-1/2-inch circular saw, so most buyers add a 5.0Ah pack. Complaints focus on the batteries and bags, not tool failures. Best for a homeowner outfitting a garage in one buy.

Who it's for

Should you buy the DeWalt DCK940D2 9-Tool?

The DeWalt DCK940D2 9-Tool is for someone who wants a right-angle drill and a grinder in the same order as the usual drill, driver and saws. It ranks #7 of 10 in our Cordless Tool Combo Kits category at $799.99, and that price is why it sits behind the DCK1021D2 10-Tool, which costs $150 less and includes a brushless drill and impact. This kit's drill and impact are the older brushed DCD771 and DCF885. If you do not specifically need the right-angle drill, the 10-Tool is the better buy.

What stands out

Where it earns its score

  • Features at 84. Nine tools including a DCG412 4-1/2 in grinder, DCD740 right-angle drill, recip saw, circular saw, LED light and Bluetooth speaker.
  • Right-angle drill. The DCD740 is the one tool here you cannot get in the 10-Tool kit, and it is the reason to pick this set.
  • Reliability at 91. These are long-running DeWalt models with well-documented durability.
  • Coverage. 3-year limited warranty, 1 year of free service and 90-day returns.
Before you buy

What to know first

  • Value is the lowest factor at 66. $800 for mostly brushed tools with 2.0Ah packs is the weakest deal in DeWalt's lineup here.
  • Batteries are too small. Two 2.0Ah packs cannot feed a 7,000 RPM grinder for long. Most owners add 5.0Ah packs.
  • Brushed drill and impact. The DCK1021D2 gives you the brushless DCD777 and DCF787 for less money.
  • 39.3 lb in two bags. Owner complaints center on the bags and batteries, not the tools.
Bottom line

Our verdict

The DeWalt DCK940D2 9-Tool scores 81, a Good Buy, held up by Reliability (91) and Satisfaction (94) and held back by Value (66). Buy it only if the right-angle drill is on your list. Otherwise the DeWalt DCK1021D2 10-Tool (82) at $649 is more tools, better motors and less money.
