Should you buy the Hydrow Wave?

The Hydrow Wave is the connected rower for someone who has tried Hydrow's on-water classes and wants them in a smaller machine. It is about 30 percent more compact than the full-size Hydrow, with a 16 inch touchscreen and electromagnetic drag that the computer adjusts in real time. The catch is a $50 monthly membership without which the screen and stats are mostly dark. At $1,995 it is for buyers sold on the experience, not for anyone comparing rowers on price. Self-directed rowers will get more from the Concept2 RowErg for half the money.

Where it earns its score

• Features scores 90. Computer-controlled resistance, a 16 inch HD touchscreen with front-facing speakers and a library of 6,000-plus workouts put it far ahead of any non-connected rower.
• Compact for a smart rower. The 80 by 19 inch footprint and 102 lb aluminum frame fit rooms where a full Hydrow would not.
• Strong capacity. 375 lb user limit, more than the Sunny or WaterRower.
• Broad Bluetooth support. Pairs to Apple Watch, heart-rate straps and headphones.

What to know first

• Value is the lowest factor at 58. The rower is $1,995 and the membership adds $600 a year. You are paying more than twice the price of the Concept2 for a lower score.
• The membership is not optional in practice. Without it the screen, stats and workout library are locked. Wi-Fi is also required.
• Reliability and Satisfaction are middling. At 76 and 78, both trail every other rower in the category.
• Upright storage costs extra. The vertical storage kit is a separate purchase.
