The de-facto replacement for the old full-size Echo: a real woofer-plus-tweeter two-way speaker with the Zigbee, Thread and Matter smart-home hub built in. Features leads the card; Value is fair rather than great after the price rose to $79.99, and it is a first-generation design so long-term reliability data is thin.

Should you buy the Amazon Echo Dot Max?
The Amazon Echo Dot Max (2025) is the practical replacement for the old full-size Echo: a 2.5-inch woofer and a tweeter in a Dot-sized body, plus the same AZ3 chip and hub radios as the Echo Studio. At $79.99 it is the middle of Amazon's lineup and third in our smart speaker ranking. If you want bigger sound and Atmos, the Echo Studio is $100 more; if you just want Alexa cheaply, the Echo Pop is $39.99.
Where it earns its score
- Features of 92. Zigbee, Matter, Thread border router, Wi-Fi 6, Omnisense sensors, and an eero extender in a $120 speaker.
- Roughly three times the bass of the Echo Dot 5. The high-excursion woofer and dedicated tweeter are a real step up from any previous Dot.
- Quality of 87. Stereo pairing and Fire TV home-theater support make it a credible small system.
- Better wake-word detection. The enhanced mic array is about 50 percent more accurate than the previous Dot.
