Should you buy the Gozney Roccbox?
The Roccbox is the pizza oven for someone who has already decided this is going to be a weekend habit, not a one-off experiment. It lives on a patio or deck, it gets used, and it is built to take that. If you want the lightest possible oven to throw in a trunk, look at the Ooni Koda 12 instead; if you want the one that holds heat best and is the most forgiving when you're learning to launch a pizza, this is it.
Where it earns its score
- Heat retention. The Roccbox's body is thicker and heavier than most 12-inch gas ovens, and that mass is why it recovers quickly between pizzas instead of sagging after the second or third launch. The published ceiling is 950°F, which is Neapolitan territory: a 12-inch pizza is done in about a minute once the stone is up to temperature.
- Two fuels, one oven. It ships gas-fired, but Gozney sells a detachable wood burner that swaps in for the gas burner. Buy the gas setup for convenience now and add wood-fired flavor later without replacing the oven.
- The silicone jacket. The outer shell is wrapped in silicone so the body stays cooler to the touch than a bare steel shell. With kids or a crowded patio, that matters more than it sounds.
- Built-in thermometer. A front-mounted dial shows internal temperature, so you don't need a separate infrared gun to know when the stone is ready. Retractable legs and a detachable burner make it packable, and a peel is in the box.
What to know first
- It's heavy. Around 44 lb. You can move it, but it is not a grab-and-go oven, and that weight is the main reason the Koda 12 exists.
- Preheat takes patience. Plan on 20–30 minutes to get the stone fully saturated with heat. Launching early is the most common cause of a pale, undercooked base.
