Steelcase Gesture
Flagship task chair, 12-yr warranty · Reviewed by Katie · amazon.com live, Sept 28 2026
Why it scored a 83
At $1,510.48 the Steelcase Gesture is the flagship task chair that reviewers keep at the top of the pile, with 360-degree arms built for phone and tablet postures. Quality and Features both score 92 for the contoured LiveBack, full recline with three locks, right-side controls and a 400-pound rating, and Warranty scores 96 on the 12-year, 24/7 policy. Value drags at 58: this is the most expensive chair here bar the Aeron, and the price is the whole caveat. It is for someone who switches between keyboard, phone and tablet all day and wants the most adjustable arms made, with budget not the deciding factor.

Should you buy the Steelcase Gesture?
The Steelcase Gesture is the chair for someone whose workday is not just keyboard and mouse. If you swap between a laptop, a phone and a tablet, lean back to read, and lean forward to type, its arms and back follow all of that. It tops our ergonomic office chair ranking at #1 of 10, and it is the second most expensive chair we cover. Buy it for the most adjustable arms in the category and a warranty that outlasts most jobs; look at the Steelcase Series 1 for the same company's build at a third of the price.
Where it earns its score
- 360-degree arms. The armrests move like a human arm, supporting you whether you are typing, holding a tablet or scrolling a phone. No other chair in our top 10 does this.
- LiveBack contouring. The back flexes and conforms to your spine as you move rather than holding one fixed curve.
- Everything within reach. All adjustments sit on the right side and can be worked while seated.
- Rated for heavy, constant use. 400 lb capacity and a 12-year, 24/7 multi-shift warranty that scores 96 on our Warranty factor.
What to know first
- Value is the weakest factor by far. At $1,510.48 it scores 58 on Value; you are paying for the arms and the warranty, not for a comfort gap over cheaper chairs.
- Fabric seat, not mesh. If you run warm and prefer a breathable mesh seat, the Aeron or Series 1 will suit you better.
- Carpet casters. The listed configuration ships with carpet casters; on hard floors you may want soft-wheel casters.
Our verdict
The Steelcase Gesture scores 83, a Good Buy and our highest chair score, on the strength of 92s in Quality and Features. It earns its price if you genuinely work across multiple devices all day. If you mostly type, the Steelcase Series 1 at $499 scores one point lower and keeps the same 12-year warranty.
