The Schlage Encode is the smart deadbolt to buy when you want the one with the longest track record and the least drama. With around 16,600 ratings it is the category benchmark, and at $229.00 it scores 86, tied with the Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro WiFi but with a very different mix: Schlage wins on quality and reliability, Ultraloq wins on price and features. There is no fingerprint reader here. If that is a must-have, look at Ultraloq or the eufy Smart Lock C220 instead. If you want a lock that looks and feels like premium door hardware and just works, this is it.

What to know first

• It costs about $100 more than Ultraloq. Value (80) is its lowest factor along with Features. You are paying for hardware quality, not extra tricks.
• No fingerprint reader. Entry is code, app or key. Ultraloq and eufy both add biometrics for less money.
• Battery life is average. Four AA batteries last roughly six months, and heavy Wi-Fi use shortens that.
