The KitchenAid 7-Qt Bowl-Lift is the mixer for the bread baker. It is the machine Consumer Reports and Serious Eats rate best for bread, kneading 8.5 lb of dough without walking across the counter, and the 500 W motor with an 11-speed range including a half-speed for folding is built for that job. It ranks ninth in our blenders and stand mixers group because at $529.95 it is overkill for cookies and cakes. If you make big batches every week, this is the one; if you do not, the Artisan 5-Qt does everything else for $150 less.

• Quality score of 92. Bowl-lift geometry, a 500 W motor and a Greenville, Ohio build that holds the bowl steady under stiff dough.
• Capacity. 7 qt handles 13 dozen cookies, 7.5 lb of potatoes or 8.5 lb of bread dough in one batch.
• Best accessory kit here. Double Flex Edge beater, coated flat beater, dough hook, 11-wire whip and a pouring shield, plus a redesigned hub for 10-plus attachments. Features scores 85.
• Half-speed for folding. A genuinely useful setting for meringues and delicate batters.

What to know first

• Warranty is the weakest ViperScore factor. One year limited, parts and labor, on the priciest mixer in the group.
• Tall and heavy. 16.5 x 11.31 x 14.63 in and 29 lb. It will not sit under a cabinet.
